Die ersten drei Fellows für die neue Regional-Initiative der DJS stehen fest. Leon Willner geht zur Mittelbayerischen Zeitung nach Regensburg, um dort im Rahmen seines Praktikums ein Talk-Format zu entwickeln. Manuel Andre wird für die Nürnberger Nachrichten eine Video-Serie über Nürnbergs Bewerbung als Kulturhauptstadt produzieren. Tom Kroll plant bei der Augsburger Allgemeinen ein Datenjournalismus-Projekt über Minijobs. Die Fellows wurden von den beteiligten Verlagen in Abstimmung mit der DJS ausgewählt.
Das Programm schafft einen Anreiz für Schülerinnen und Schüler der ersten Journalistenschule Deutschlands, an der digitalen Transformation von zukunftsorientierten regionalen Häusern mitzuwirken. Die Fellows arbeiten drei Monate lang in der jeweiligen Partnerredaktion. Sie erhalten dort die Chance, digitale Projekte schnell und unbürokratisch umzusetzen. So können sie vertiefen, was sie an der DJS gelernt haben, von der Datenrecherche über die Formatentwicklung bis zur Videoproduktion.
Manuel Andre überzeugte das Auswahlgremium mit einem innovativen Format “für Leute, die im Internet zuhause und in Nürnberg daheim sind”. Seine Videoserie zielt darauf ab, junge Menschen mit Qualitätsjournalismus zu erreichen und an eine vertrauenswürdige Medienmarke zu binden. Leon Willner plant eine Talk-Show auf YouTube, um seine eigene Generation zu inspirieren. Kroll will crowdbasierte Recherchemethoden nutzen, um die Rechtmäßigkeit geringfügiger Beschäftigungsverhältnisse zu überprüfen — und damit neue Zielgruppen für die Zeitung erschließen.
Mit dem Fellowship-Programm reagieren die beteiligten Verlage und die DJS auf das Nachwuchsproblem im Journalismus. Die Durchschnittsqualität der Volontariats-Bewerber sinkt gerade in einer Zeit, in der Leserinnen und Leser nur mit Qualität überzeugt werden können, für digitale Inhalte zu bezahlen. Das Programm steht perspektivisch auch anderen digital aufgestellten Häusern offen.
