Wer die Deutsche Journalistenschule besucht hat, arbeitet danach auch erfolgreich im Journalistenberuf und verdient dabei meist besser als gemeinhin angenommen. 92 Prozent der neuesten DJS-Absolventinnen und Absolventen sind heute hauptberuflich im Journalismus tätig, wie eine Auswertung der Karrierewege der jüngsten fünf Jahrgänge ergab. Beim erst 2018 in den Beruf eingetretenen Nachwuchs waren es sogar 98 Prozent. Die Auswertung machten wir im Oktober 2019.
Die Bandbreite der Bruttojahreseinkommen der fünf Jahrgänge ist groß, wie die Alumni uns in einer zusätzlichen anonymisierten Befragung sagten. Zwei Drittel verdienen als Journalisten mehr als 40.000 Euro im Jahr. Die Einkommensverteilung unterscheidet sich jedoch stark nach Berufsjahren. Ein Jahr nach dem Abschluss verdienten erst 15 Prozent über 50.000 Euro im Jahr. Fünf Jahre nach dem Abschluss waren es 59 Prozent. An dieser anonymisierten Befragung beteiligten sich im Schnitt 62 Prozent der Alumni aus den 50. bis 55. Lehrredaktionen. Jeder Lehrredaktion gehören 45 Studierende an.
